However, in the traditional reckoning, its first month begins in March or April of the Gregorian calendar, depending on whether the adhika masa (an extra month for alignment of the lunar or solar calendar) was observed in that year.

The first day of Chaitra is celebrated as the Chaitra Navaratri, signifying the Hindu lunar new year.
