Guru Purnima 2023: Date, Time History, Significance and Rituals

Guru Purnima Date Calendar in India 2023

The Sikh celebration of Guru Purnima includes offering prayers at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. Devotees also gather at the local Gurdwaras and participate in Akhand Path (continuous reading of the Guru Granth Sahib). People exchange sweets and sing hymns in praise of the Guru.

It is essential to observe the first three Muhurats of the Purnima Tithi following daybreak to properly celebrate Guru Purnima. Celebrating without these three Muhurats after sunrise is not possible.

Vidhi Guru Purnima Puja
  • You are encouraged to get up early and perform daily routine duties such as showering, Puja, and so on; and to dress appropriately on this day.
  • Then, present flowers and garlands to Vyasa Ji before going to see your own Guru.
  • Make a garland for your guru as well.
  • Then, on this auspicious day, you are obliged to bring garments, fruits, flowers, garland, and Dakshina or money to your Guru and accept their blessings.

How to do pooja on Guru Purnima?

Devotees wake up at an early hour and take a sacred bath. Subsequently, they perform Vyas Pooja, followed by Hawan and Yajna, before going to the Ashram of their Guru. They make sure that the sandals of the sage are venerated by the visitors. The ritual of Diksha is a momentous occasion on this day.

Who is a guru in simple words?

A Guru is an instructor, who imparts religious and spiritual wisdom. This person does not necessarily need to be an Acariya or Upajjhaya, and can also be a personal mentor. The Buddha is called “Lokagaru”, meaning “mentor of the universe”.

What is the short story of Guru Purnima?

Around five weeks after attaining enlightenment, the Lord Buddha spoke his first sermon, which occurred on a full moon day. Ever since this event, his devotees have venerated him and revere the day of his first sermon.
