Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati Jayanti: Celebrating the Life and Teachings of a Visionary

Dayanand Saraswati, or Maharshi Dayanand, holds a prominent place in Indian history. Born as Mula Shankar Tiwari on February 12, 1824, he was not only a philosopher and social leader but also the visionary behind the Arya Samaj – a reform movement dedicated to the principles of Vedic dharma.

His magnum opus, Satyarth Prakash, stands as a highly influential work that illuminates the philosophy of the Vedas and provides profound insights into various aspects of human existence. In 1876, Dayanand made a revolutionary call for Swaraj, advocating for the self-governance of India by its own people. This call later resonated with Lokmanya Tilak.

Dayanand vehemently denounced idol worship and ritualistic practices, striving to revive the core tenets of Vedic ideologies. His endeavors left an indelible mark, earning him recognition as one of the “architects of Modern India” by philosopher and President of India, S. Radhakrishnan, as well as Sri Aurobindo.

Dayanand’s exceptional influence inspired numerous individuals to become his followers. Among these notable names are Madam Cama, Pandit Lekh Ram, Swami Shraddhanand, Shyamji Krishna Varma, Kishan Singh, Bhagat Singh, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Bhai Parmanand, Lala Hardayal, Madan Lal Dhingra, Ram Prasad Bismil, Mahadev Govind Ranade, Ashfaq Ullah Khan, Mahatma Hansraj, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Yogmaya Neupane.

From his early days as a sanyasi (ascetic), Dayanand displayed a remarkable dedication to scholarly pursuits. Firmly believing in the infallible authority of the Vedas, he ardently advocated for the doctrines of Karma and Reincarnation. Through his emphasis on Vedic ideals such as brahmacharya, which encompassed celibacy and unwavering devotion to God, he left an indelible impact on society.

One of Dayanand’s notable contributions was his staunch advocacy for women’s equal rights. He fought for their right to education and their access to Indian scriptures. Furthermore, he provided commentary on the Vedas in both Vedic Sanskrit and Hindi, making these ancient texts more accessible to the masses.
