After much deliberation and some changes, the Constitution was adopted on 24 January 1950 and came into effect two days later. This day is celebrated as Republic Day in India. Dr Rajendra Prasad became the first President of the Indian Union. The Constituent Assembly became the Parliament of India under the new Constitution. In his final speech to the Constituent Assembly, Dr Ambedkar discussed the potential and pitfalls of life after 26 January 1950.
The speaker highlights the contradiction between political equality and social and economic inequality in India. They question how long this contradiction can be sustained and warn that if inequality persists, it will endanger political democracy.
