Republic Day in India 2025: Celebrating India’s Unity and Democracy

January 2, 2025

Republic Day Celebration 2025 in India

Republic Day is a significant event in the history of India, commemorating the momentous occasion when the Constitution of India was enforced on 26th January 1950. This marked a pivotal shift as it replaced the Government of India Act 1935, establishing India as an independent republic, distinct from the British Raj. The Indian Constituent Assembly formally adopted the constitution on 26th November 1949, with its implementation taking place on 26th January 1950. The decision to celebrate Republic Day on this date was influenced by the declaration of Indian Independence made by the Indian National Congress on 26th January 1930.

History of Republic Day

India achieved independence from British rule on 15 August 1947. The country became a constitutional monarchy with George VI as head of state and the Earl Mountbatten as governor-general. A Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution, which was submitted to the Constituent Assembly on 4 November 1947. After much deliberation and some changes, the Constitution was adopted on 24 January 1950 and came into effect two days later. This day is celebrated as Republic Day in India. Dr Rajendra Prasad became the first President of the Indian Union. The Constituent Assembly became the Parliament of India under the new Constitution. In his final speech to the Constituent Assembly, Dr Ambedkar discussed the potential and pitfalls of life after 26 January 1950.

The speaker highlights the contradiction between political equality and social and economic inequality in India. They question how long this contradiction can be sustained and warn that if inequality persists, it will endanger political democracy. They urge for the removal of this contradiction to prevent potential unrest.
