Legend of Vaikuntha Ekadasi

The story of Vaikuntha Ekadasi can be traced back to a captivating legend found within the sacred text known as the Padma Purana. This enchanting narrative revolves around a fearsome asura named Murāsura, who possessed a powerful boon granted by Brahma, causing great distress among the devas. In their desperate search for assistance, the devas turned to Vishnu, who fearlessly engaged in a battle against this formidable adversary. Despite their best efforts, the devas were unable to defeat Murasura. Determined to restore harmony and protect the divine realm, Vishnu sought refuge in a mystical cave called Simhavati, nestled near Badarikashrama. However, Murasura relentlessly pursued him, leaving Vishnu with no choice but to summon Yogamaya, a goddess born from his own divine energy, who swiftly defeated the asura. In deep gratitude, Vishnu bestowed upon the goddess the title of “Ekadashi” and proclaimed her ability to absolve the sins of all humankind. And thus, the first Ekadashi was born, known as Dhanurmasa Shukla Paksha Ekadashi.

In another captivating tale, we encounter Ambarisha, a devout Vaishnava king from Ayodhya. Unwavering in his commitment to fasting during this auspicious occasion, Ambarisha found himself in a predicament after three days of abstaining from food. At that moment, the sage Durvasa arrived at the city gates. Showing utmost respect, the king welcomed him, but Durvasa requested time for his ritualistic ablutions before joining the meal. As minutes turned into hours, Ambarisha faced a difficult decision. Breaking his fast before Durvasa returned would be disrespectful, yet continuing the fast until the day ended would render it meaningless.

After careful consideration, Ambarisha decided to consume a small sip of water, symbolizing the end of his fast while hoping to avoid offending Durvasa. However, upon Durvasa’s belated return, the sage became furious. He plucked a clump of hair from his head and hurled it towards the king. Fortunately, Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra intercepted the clump and pursued Durvasa. Desperate for refuge, Durvasa sought protection from Brahma and Shiva but was denied by both deities. Ultimately, he turned to Vishnu himself, who revealed that only Ambarisha’s forgiveness could save him. With humility, Durvasa sought forgiveness from Ambarisha and was granted salvation.

Yet another captivating legend recounts Vishnu’s benevolent act of opening the gates to Vaikuntha, his divine abode, for two defiant asuras. These asuras begged Vishnu for a boon, declaring that anyone who listens to their story and witnesses Vishnu emerging from the illustrious Vaikuntha Dvaram would attain the sublime realm of Vaikuntha. As a testament to this tale, temples across India commemorate this day by constructing door-like structures, enabling devotees to pass through and embark on a spiritual journey towards Vaikuntha.
