Pongal 2024 Holidays

Thai Pongal, a joyous and vibrant harvest festival, is specially celebrated by the Tamil community, not only in South India but also in countries such as Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, various European countries, North America, South Africa, and Mauritius. This auspicious festival, which holds deep cultural significance, is dedicated to the worship of Surya, the Sun God, and it corresponds to Makar Sankranti, a harvest festival celebrated under different regional names across India. The Pongal festival spans three glorious days, each with its unique rituals and festivities. The first day, known as (Lohri) Bhogi Pongal, is a time to discard old belongings and welcome new beginnings. On the second day, Surya Pongal, people express gratitude to the Sun God for the bountiful harvest and offer prayers for prosperity and abundance. The third day, called Mattu Pongal, is dedicated to celebrating the cattle that play a vital role in the agricultural process. Some Tamils also observe a fourth day known as Kanum Pongal, where families gather to enjoy each other’s company and partake in various leisure activities. And the last day celebrated as Uzhavar Dhinam. With its vibrant traditions and rich cultural heritage, Pongal is a festival that brings people together to celebrate the beauty of nature and the abundance it provides.

Pongal 2024: Pongal, a renowned festival in India, holds immense significance among the Tamil community worldwide. According to the Tamil solar calendar, Pongal is celebrated during the Tai month, spanning four days. In the Gregorian calendar, the festival falls on 14 January 2023 and continues till 17 January 2023.

Pongal is an agricultural celebration that takes place over four days in Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India. Since time immemorial, harvest festivals have been observed as a way to honor the cultivation and gathering of food. Pongal, being one of the most prominent Hindu festivals, is a four-day expression of gratitude towards nature. Its name originates from the Tamil term meaning “to boil,” symbolizing the act of cooking rice, cereals, sugarcane, and turmeric (an essential ingredient in Tamil cuisine) during the bountiful Thai (January-February) season of harvest.

Indian Army Day 2024: Every year on the 15th of January, a day of great significance and pride, the nation of India comes together to observe and celebrate Indian Army Day. This commemoration holds deep meaning as it marks the historic moment in 1949 when Field Marshal Kodandera M Cariappa, a revered figure in Indian military history, assumed the esteemed position of the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. This transition of power from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief, symbolized the dawn of a new era for the Indian Army, reflecting the country’s journey towards independence and self-governance. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers who have dedicated their lives to protecting the nation’s sovereignty and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. On this auspicious day, the entire nation stands united in gratitude and admiration for the Indian Army, their unwavering courage, and their tireless dedication to the service of the nation.

Magh Bihu 2024: Magh Bihu, also known as Bhogali Bihu, is a vibrant and joyous festival celebrated in the Indian state of Assam. This festival, which falls in the month of Magh (January/February), marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the harvesting of the new crops. During Magh Bihu, people gather around bonfires called “mejis” and indulge in feasting on traditional delicacies like pitha (rice cakes) and laru (sweet balls made of coconut and jaggery). The air is filled with the sound of traditional Bihu songs and dance performances, as people come together to celebrate the blessings of nature and the abundance of the harvest.
