2024 Long Weekend Holidays in Tamil Nadu
The Government of Tamil Nadu has recently published the official list of public holidays for the year 2024. Commencing the year, New Year’s Day will take place on Monday, January 1st. This day holds particular significance as it allows for a three-day break, and if an additional day off is taken, it can result in a four-day long weekend. It is an excellent opportunity to plan ahead, embrace joy, and indulge in leisure activities.
Following this, we have the cherished festival of ‘Pongal Pandigai.’ Falling on Monday, January 15th, 2024, this day provides for an extended weekend, making it the longest weekend of the year. Moreover, January 16th, 2024, has been declared a government holiday in observance of Thiruvalluvar Day. The subsequent day, Wednesday, January 17th, 2024, is also a public holiday, celebrated as Farmer’s Day. This arrangement provides five consecutive days of respite.
Looking ahead, Good Friday will be observed on Friday, March 29th, 2024. This occasion grants a three-day holiday, including the weekend of Saturday and Sunday. Similarly, Bakrid will occur on Monday, June 17th, 2024, providing another three-day holiday period encompassing the weekend. Furthermore, Eid e Milad falls on Monday, September 16th, 2024, giving rise to a three-day holiday with the inclusion of Saturday and Sunday.
Moving onward, Ayutha Pooja is scheduled for Friday, October 11th, 2024. This day allows for a well-deserved break. The subsequent day, Saturday, October 12th, 2024 marks Vijaya Dashami and completes a three-day holiday period that concludes on Sunday.
With this comprehensive list of public holidays, individuals can effectively plan their schedules and make the most of their time off.

CG Offices Holidays 2024 in Chennai
Central Govt Office Holidays 2024 in Tamil Nadu: The Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee – GST Chennai recently engaged in discussions, during which representatives from the Postal Department and Indian Air Force Station, Tambaram put forth a proposal. They suggested that Vinayagar Chathurthi, even though it falls on a Saturday, should be included in the list of closed holidays. This is because their offices operate six days a week, unlike other department offices which function for five days and consider Saturday as a holiday. After careful consideration, the committee has approved the proposal and decided to observe three additional holidays, in addition to the compulsory 14 holidays, for Central Government Offices situated in Chennai. These holidays are as follows:
1. Pongal – 15th January 2024 (Monday)
2. Vinayaga Chathurthi – 7th September 2024 (Saturday)
3. Additional Holiday for Dussehra – 11 October 2024 (Friday)
